Delphi was the priestess to Apollo. This blog post will be about how Delphi came to be and the mythology behind it. The story goes that Apollo won in a battle on top of the hills of Delphi. This is where Apollo killed the Python, this area is marked by a dome shaped rock in front of the Oracle's entrance. Most Greek's thought that Delphi was the center of the world. This is called the Omphalos story. It is told that Zeus released two eagles, these eagles where going to find the center of the world. When the eagles were to meet, that's where the center was. And of course, they met at Delphi, making it the center of the world. If you've read my posts, you would have known that Pythia breathed Ethylene gases. Apollo supposedly put the Oracle here because there was a crack in the earth, which released the gases. As you can see, the rise of the Delphi was magically, so the fall must had to be as great. To really understand the fall, read up here about the Fall of Greece. Now that you've probably read about how Rome took over Greece, towards the end the Romans started to believe in Christianity. The Roman Emperor, Theodosius, shut down the Oracle because he thought that the Christians shouldn't believe in Apollo. The temple was destroyed in a fire around 548 BCE. But, it is still partially up today. Wanna learn more? Click the blue words or check out my sources: 1 2 3
