Delphi was the priestess to Apollo. This blog post will be about how Delphi came to be and the mythology behind it. The story goes that Apollo won in a battle on top of the hills of Delphi. This is where Apollo killed the Python, this area is marked by a dome shaped rock in front of the Oracle's entrance. Most Greek's thought that Delphi was the center of the world. This is called the Omphalos story. It is told that Zeus released two eagles, these eagles where going to find the center of the world. When the eagles were to meet, that's where the center was. And of course, they met at Delphi, making it the center of the world. If you've read my posts, you would have known that Pythia breathed Ethylene gases. Apollo supposedly put the Oracle here because there was a crack in the earth, which released the gases. As you can see, the rise of the Delphi was magically, so the fall must had to be as great. To really understand the fall, read up here about the Fall of Greece. Now that you've probably read about how Rome took over Greece, towards the end the Romans started to believe in Christianity. The Roman Emperor, Theodosius, shut down the Oracle because he thought that the Christians shouldn't believe in Apollo. The temple was destroyed in a fire around 548 BCE. But, it is still partially up today. Wanna learn more? Click the blue words or check out my sources: 1 2 3
Hello Oraclies,
I have made a change to my web-site, I will no longer have comments. I have deleted my questions and suggestions page, but everything else is still there! Thank you for your cooperation. Delphina Hey Oraclies! Who's ready to learn some more awesome information about Oracles?! This post will be all about who were the oracles and how they gave their tellings. First, let's clarify, mainly this post will be about Pythia (Delphi). I know some of you really want to learn about other ones, but her process was very interesting and complex, maybe you will think so too. How would feel if you were in a Greek's shoes? So, heres the setting, Phythia, the beautiful oracle, standing right in front of you. You've flocked all the way from Athens, 182 km away, carrying a pelanos and a goat to give to Pythia. You see her sitting on top of a tripod, ethylene gas surrounding her. Your son is at war, you are wondering if he will come back. You wait around all day, you become tired. Finally, Pythia comes back. You are given a prophecy. You are confused by her dual meanings. As you read over the prophecy, you bite your lip, scanning for commas. As you have heard from previous prophecies, if the comma is before the warriors name, he will live, it is placed behind, he will die. You spot the comma, a chill runs down your spine. You are relived that the comma is before the name. You jump inside, thank Pythia and leave. How did that feel? Did you anticipate the worst? How about Pythia's perspective? Let's see... (You=Pythia) Tired by yesterday's prophecies, you bath in the Castilian Spring. You have just received a posing new question, will my son return from war? You've heard this question countless times before. You ponder the question again as you burn laurel leaves. As you approach an answer, you drink some holy water. When you walk back into a building, the woman hands you a pelanos and a goat, to be sacrificed. Once taken away to be sacrificed, you give her the prophecy. You watch and then leave, another job complete. How did both perspectives feel? Want to learn more? Check out my sources: Source 1 Source 2 Source 3
Hello Precious Oraclies!
Thank you for checking back! Just a quick recap, Oracles are people (sort of like Physics) that told the Greeks advice from the Gods. One of my questions was, who used the oracles and why? Mostly Greeks used the oracle (duh) Since the Greeks where obsessed with their gods, they wouldn't make a decision without the gods' approval. That's where the Oracles come in. The Oracles were basically the voice of the gods. So, the Greeks went to the Oracles to get the advice they needed. Many people went to the city that the Oracle was in, like Delphi. One example of Delphi's great advice was in the Persian Wars. The army general asked Pythia for his next play. Pythia said that wooden walls would work. This move ended up helping Greece win. The Greeks were soooo happy they created the Pythian Games, which eventually ended up to be the Olympics! To have your answer, or to even ask a question, you couldn't just show up, like the Physic Hotline, you had to wait around and make your way to the Oracle. I used these for my sources: Source 1 Source 2 Source 3 Hello Loyal Oraclies!
I've learned a lot more things about oracles recently! Stay tuned to see them be reveled! Check out these links to learn for your self! http://ancient-greece.org/history/delphi.html http://www.ancient.eu/delphi/ http://www.historyforkids.org/learn/greeks/religion/oracle.htm Hello Oraclies!
So, my topic is about ancient Greek oracles, specifically the Oracle at Delphi. I chose this topic because personally, I love the future and psychology. The fact that we still do the exact same thing today is pretty outstanding. Also, the idea that many people flocked to the towns where oracles were was quite amazing. The Greek's would go anywhere to provide their loyalty to their gods. I plan on talking about what the oracle's did, who were the oracles, and how do the oracle's provide their future tellings. I also plan on talking about how the gods influenced their answers. Stay tuned to learn more! Hey Oraclies! Sorry that I haven't been posting… pretty busy! So, just as a check-in, how do you like my website? I am researching now more things about Oracles, I might narrow it down to just Delphi, comment your opinion! |
